Descriptors for effort and homework grades for years 7 to 13
B falls between A and C. D falls between C and E.
Effort Grades:
A
Excellent
The student is able to show interest by asking pertinent and sensible questions at
appropriate times. S/he keeps up with the note taking as required. The student does as
much as s/he can and shows a willingness to try in all areas. S/he is always ready to
answer questions, and shows good listening skills and concentration. Teacher comments
are taken note of and an effort is made to improve on past work. S/he is on task for the
whole lesson, avoiding distractions such as chatting or time wasting.
C
Needs Improvement
The student sometimes asks pertinent and sensible questions, but does not always
maintain the note taking as required. The student often pays attention although sometimes
talks or interrupts when the teacher or another student is addressing the class.
The student is often not ready to answer questions, showing lapses in concentration.
E
Very Poor
The student persistently talks or interrupts when the teacher or another student is
addressing the class or at other inappropriate times. The student does not keep up
with the note taking or the notes show a lack of care. The student almost never asks or
answers appropriate questions. The student lacks concentration, and on the whole has
difficulty staying on task, which can cause disruptions to learning. This grade will have a
detrimental impact on her/his achievement grades and is a serious cause for concern.
Homework Grades:
A
Excellent
The student always hands in original work on the due date, and her/his work shows
evidence of thought and planning, with all parts neatly attempted, showing that the student
has tried her/his best. If the student has difficulty with the work or deadline or is unsure
about any aspect of a task s/he will see the teacher in advance – at least the day before.
Notes and diary entries are well-organised. The student always proofreads all written work
before handing it in.
C
Needs Improvement
The student does not always hand work in on the due date. Although her/his work shows
evidence of thought and planning, with most parts attempted, there is some room for
improvement. The student usually maintains a fairly well-organised diary. The student
frequently does not proofread all written work before handing it in.
E
Very Poor
Far too much homework is incomplete or not handed in. The homework diary is not filled
in adequately. This is a serious cause for concern as homework is used to consolidate
and extend work done in class. This grade will have a detrimental impact on her/his
achievement grades and is a serious cause for concern.
