Every IB Diploma candidate is required to study a Group 1 language at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL).
For the majority of candidates, language A1 will be their best language, in that they are expected to have native or near-native command of the language. It is, therefore, the candidate's primary means of communication.
English and Thai A1 are offered at GIS at both SL and HL.
The Language A1 programme aims to promote an appreciation of the wealth and subtleties of the language and to lead to an awareness of linguistic structures. It encourages the development of an appreciation of literature and knowledge of other cultures and societies.
Where no teacher is available in a student's first language, provision is made by the International Baccalaureate organisation for students to study language A1 as a school supported self-taught course at Standard Level (SL) only. An example of a school supported self-taught language at GIS is Korean A1.
At Higher Level, the students will cover a total of 15 literary works during the course. At Standard Level they will cover 11 literary works.
The Syllabus
The Standard Level programme is divided into four parts as follows:
Total number of works: 3
Total number of works: 2
Total number of works: 3

At Higher Level, the programme involves additional works in Groups 2, 3 and 4, with a greater degree of depth in the study of each work.
